Below is the operative definition TLF will use when deciding eligibility for receiving a TLF Fellowship for Summer 2021 applicants and beyond.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4231681a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"4231681a\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-4b8a10af\" data-id=\"4b8a10af\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-25a1b5a7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"25a1b5a7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eligibility is limited to internships at qualified public interest organizations where the applicant will complete at least 400 hours of substantive legal work over 10 weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A \u201cqualified public interest program\u201d is a nonprofit or governmental organization which directly serves the public\u2014particularly underserved communities with limited access to justice\u2014through legal advocacy. This definition does not apply <em>solely <\/em>to organizations which serve marginalized communities, but excludes organizations that: advocate limiting the rights of any underprivileged or marginalized community; may harm such communities; or whose actions or policies show a disregard for the public interest or human rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Qualified public interest programs include, but are not limited to:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">501(c)(3) nonprofits<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Governmental agencies (unless otherwise excluded)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">International organizations that, if domestic, would qualify for TLF funding<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Non-partisan legislative entities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Federal and state court criminal justice work<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Qualified public interest programs generally do NOT include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lobbying organizations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Direct advocacy internships (e.g. non-legal work designed to influence policy)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Partisan legislative entities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Non-prosecutorial law enforcement agencies<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Judicial internships<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Organizations that do not clearly fit into these parameters will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Review Board and we will make every effort to include all organizations serving the public interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Texas Law Fellowship (&#8220;TLF&#8221;) updated its definition of public interest in December, 2020.
