Geran is from Santa Fe, New Mexico. He graduated from Seattle University with a degree in Creative Writing in 2016, and is a 2L at the University of Texas School of Law. Over the summer he worked at the New Mexico Environmental Law Center (NMELC) in Santa Fe, NM.

He chose to work at NMELC because he has a long standing interest in environmental justice issues. When speaking about his summer experience, Geran says, “I researched the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and explored possible avenues of litigation under the federal statute. I assisted in research prompted by an attempt to disqualify certain Air Quality Control Board members from hearing a case against a hot mix asphalt batch plant. I also learned more about the New Mexico Mining Act, and the role various state agencies play in protecting New Mexico’s water from mining pollution. Along with the more traditional legal research and writing, I was also able to take part in a variety of community stakeholder meetings. These opportunities were invaluable and gave me exposure to true community lawyering. My time at NMELC helped me develop not only my legal skills, but also challenged me to become a better and more informed community member as well.

TLF funding allowed me to explore a possible career option, without having to worry about working another job to support myself over the summer. My internship was unfunded, so I would not have been able to take it without TLF’s support. Thanks to TLF’s support I was able to gain invaluable experience and am now more certain of the career I want to pursue.”
